Interdisciplinary Research Showcases Students' Scientific Vision

The event began with an academic symposium, highlighting a dynamic exchange of interdisciplinary thinking. MIC student Jessie presented her research, "Can Lifestyle Choices Alter Epigenetic Markers Linked to Depression and Anxiety?" She found that diets high in processed foods may increase DNA methylation in genes related to stress response and mood regulation, suggesting lifestyle choices could influence epigenetic markers tied to mental health. Additionally, she explored how diet and art might positively impact psychological well-being.

Another student, Melody, presented "Differences in Fat and Protein Content Among Various Meat Types." Using FAST testing and turbidity analysis, she systematically compared the nutritional profiles of marbled pork and regular pork, finding that marbled pork contained 28% fat (versus 13% in regular pork). Her research creatively linked biochemical analysis with public health concerns, demonstrating scientific insight beyond her years.

Professors Colledge and Jones provided on-site critiques of the students' presentations. Both Jessie and Melody responded confidently to expert questions, earning high praise for their independent research attitudes and strong academic defense skills.

PhD Eve Zhang shared her cutting-edge research on ADHD mechanisms using viral tracing technology and eye-tracking paradigms. Her "Rice and Butterfly" model vividly illustrated the neural regulation of focus and distraction, offering key theoretical support for new intervention strategies.

Academic Leaders Share Their Research Journeys and Cambridge Spirit

In the admissions seminar, Cambridge neuroscientist Associate Professor Sue Jones traced her academic path—from University College London to Oxford Medical School, and finally to Cambridge. She emphasized Cambridge's tradition of "academic freedom" in nurturing talent by granting students autonomy in research.

Professor Colledge, drawing from  work in reproductive physiology and neuroendocrinology, highlighted the critical role of interdisciplinary collaboration in solving scientific puzzles and explained how Cambridge’s collegiate system fosters academic networking and personal growth.

PhD candidate Eve shared her journey from Hunan University to the University of Bristol and then to Cambridge. She reflected on her first-year assessments and international conference presentations, stressing the importance of choosing research aligned with personal passion and encouraging women in STEM.

Cambridge Professors Recognize MIC’s Holistic Education

During Q&A, when asked, "What else must I do to meet Cambridge’s admission standards?" the Cambridge mentors gave an encouraging response. Professor Colledge smiled and affirmed, "No need for excessive worry—you’re already growing in the right environment. MIC’s holistic education is fertile ground for future Cambridge scholars."

He elaborated that MIC’s emphasis on critical thinking, interdisciplinary projects, and personalized mentorship aligns perfectly with Cambridge’s spirit of academic freedom. "The freedom to explore here is the best training for adaptability. Stay curious, keep deepening your interests—your mentors and curriculum have already built the ladder to world-class universities."

Eve added that career choices should follow research passion, as skills translate across medicine, biotech, and policy consulting. "Love for your work is the driving force behind sustained innovation."

This event brought MIC students face-to-face with cutting-edge science while deepening their understanding of the researcher’s ethos: "Let curiosity be your boat, and responsibility your sail." It established a new platform for Sino-foreign academic exchange and injected strong momentum into MIC’s mission of cultivating future scientific talent.
